"Memory" in ASCII, 1988

Is the meaning of the work in the art, or is the meaning of the work in your head?

If you know the title of the work and you know ASCII, you can look at the 7 x 6 grid and put the 1s and 0s where they belong - "Memory". If you don't know the title but recognize the artist you might say, "What could this possibly spell in ASCII that has six letters? Lots of things." If you're just looking at the work with no memory of the title or the artist, you might just think, "Hmmm, . . . .looks a little Shinto . . . like a . . . like a . . . "

"MU" in 6-bit ASCII, 1989

Here is the recipe for making a "MU" in ASCII:

1. Translate an excerpt from one of Meister Eckhart's sermons into binary and inscribe it on clay tablets using a cuneiform tool.

2. Fire the clay.

3. Make a hypercube from 2x4s.

4. Dig sand from the local Red River and put it inside the wooden frame on a plastic sheet.

5. Sprinkle grass seed over the sand, water it every few days and wait for the grass to grow.

6. When the grass has reached a nice height, place the clay tablets over the grass, spelling the work "MU" (i.e, see Ekai aka Mumon).

7. Place a computer in a net in the far corner of the wooden hypercube with poetry continually scrolling up the screen.

8. Add artists, cheese and wine to taste.

It is important not to get too caught up in rationalism or its close cousin irrationalism. Like two little kids, Art and Reason love to shout at each other, "You're not the MOM of me!"
